Sitting in a taxi to Heathrow and a Lufthansa flight to Zurich, Hans Schubert made a call. He spoke in German as it was less likely the taxi driver would be able to overhear and understand.

“Drexel’s secretary is his Achilles heel. She is naïve and easy to manipulate. I’m sure we will have what we need very soon.” He listened to the reply with satisfaction and nodded his head in agreement. “Yes, everything is occurring much as we expected.”

Karl shivered naked on the floor and watched Mrs. Constance unfasten the tie clip from his boxers. She threw them so they hit him in his face.

“Get dressed child and be quick about it.”

It wasn’t the usual sort of command people give. As soon as Mrs. Constance finished speaking Karl found his mind had become a mere passenger in his body. He got to his feet and started dressing at breakneck speed. He tried to stop his hands from picking up his clothes but they did what Mrs. Constance had ordered and didn’t pay any attention to him.

Despite his relief at being dressed again, Karl would much rather he was stark naked and in control of his body. It was utterly terrifying that he had no control. What if she told me to stop breathing?

Drexel re-entered the office and strode to over to Mrs. Constance.

“You found it then?”

She held up the tie clip and then put it into her pocket. “I recognize it. This was Pettigrew’s piece.”

Drexel shook his head. “That’s highly unlikely. How could the boy have got hold of it?”

Mrs. Constance smiled, it wasn’t a pleasant smile and Karl felt his blood run cold. “Shall we ask him?”

Drexel pulled a sheet of paper from his pocket. “I want answers to these questions, but ask your own as well if you must.”

Mrs. Constance took the paper and glanced at it before she turned to Karl.

“Who gave you the silver?”

Karl tried not to answer, but his mouth had other plans. “Glass.”

Mrs. Constance sucked air through her teeth. “Not the Grange brats?”

“Mandy gave it to Glass and she gave it to me.” Karl wanted to bite his tongue off, but he was unable to stop his answers. Butterflies swirled in his stomach as he realized how much he was giving away.

“I knew they were involved.” Mrs. Constance sounded gleeful. “Can you bring her here so I can slit her throat?”

“No, I only get visits from Glass.”

“Mrs. Constance will you ask the questions on the paper first?” Drexel sounded annoyed.

“Very well, Mr. Drexel,” Mrs. Constance replied, apparently without rancor. She turned back to Karl and asked the first question on the paper, “Do you know what’s going on here?”

“They’re extracting something from our blood, something we make more of when we’re stressed.”

“Do you know what Project Phoenix is?”

“Never heard of it.” Karl felt the pressure inside him ease as he didn’t care about answering these questions.

“Where is Glass hiding?”

“Nowhere, she’s back in her home.”

Drexel moved closer to Mrs. Constance. “Ask him where she lives.”

“Where does Glass live?”

Karl wondered if he could add words provided he still answered the question.
